Description Semiaquilegia adoxoides (formerly Semiaquilegia ecalcara) | ‘Double-Flowered White’ Spurless Columbine This double flowered columbine, also known as Tian kui and Hime-izu, is a close cousin to regular Columbine (Aquilegia), differing in that the flowers lack the usual spurs on the back. It makes a delightful plant in a rock garden or in a bright woodland location. It forms a mound or tuft of finely divided, ferny-looking leaves (similar to Columbine) bearing upright stems. This double-flowered form of the species produces pure white flowers during late spring and early summer. Prefers a well-drained, but moist soil. Will tolerate full sun in cool summer regions. Allow to self seed for successive generations, since these are relatively short-lived perennials. Native to open woodlands in China. Korea and Japan. Seeds may require cold-stratification before sowing indoors, or one can direct-sow them outdoors in autumn or late winter/spring.
